A suspenseful, spellbinding novel of love, jealousy, and murder, The Ripper's Wife re-imagines the most notorious serial killer in history through the eyes of the woman who sealed his fate.
"Love makes sane men mad and can turn a gentle man into a fiend."
It begins as a fairytale romance--a shipboard meeting in 1880 between vivacious Southern belle Florence Chandler and handsome English cotton broker James Maybrick. Courtship and a lavish wedding soon follow, and the couple settles into an affluent Liverpool suburb.
From the first, their marriage is doomed by lies. Florie, hardly the heiress her scheming mother portrayed, is treated as an outsider by fashionable English society. James's secrets are infinitely darker--he has a mistress, an arsenic addiction, and a vicious temper. But Florie has no inkling of her husband's depravity until she discovers his diary--and in it, a litany of bloody deeds...
My Review:
The Ripper’s Wife by
Brandy Purdy was just as I expect of any novel by Ms. Purdy, which is excellent! I
loved this book, and I become completely hooked on the story and the
characters. You really get an inside view of what Jack the Ripper’s life might
have been like, and what might have pushed him to commit the heinous acts that he
did. It really makes you wonder who exactly Jack the Ripper was in real life? Purdy’s idea
that he was a man from the lower nobility, addicted to arsenic, and obsessed
with his wife and with prostitutes, is as good a guess as anyone’s.
I really liked Florie, who is the 'ripper's wife'. Her character was well-written and somewhat relatable. She went through so
much, but stayed strong for her children. You really ache for her when you see
all of the hardships that she is put through. As a reader, you want so badly
for her life to turn out perfectly, for things to right themselves and for her
to be happy, because she seems so naive and innocent. Jim, her husband, was really well written, also. I like that I was
able to get an inside view of what Jack the Ripper might have been like. At
times it did get a little too gruesome/gory for me, but I guess that’s something you
can’t avoid in a novel about Jack the Ripper! Everything was written vividly,
and flowed smoothly. You definitely choose sides in this book, and when I say choose
sides, I mean you choose Florie’s side! She is clearly victimized and taken
advantage of time and time again, and it seems like there is no one who will
protect her. I am a big fan of the author, Brandy Purdy, and I would definitely
recommend any of her books to those who enjoy historical fiction, and The
Ripper’s Wife is no different. I give this novel a FIVE out of FIVE stars!

"The writing is inviting, intense and flawless, rich with the flavor of English country life as well as court life. The political machinations, the tragedy to befall the Dudley family and the mystery surrounding Amy's death were weaved to captivating detail and the end result is a mesmerizing work of historical fiction that puts Brandy Purdy on my "must read" list." -Psychotic State Book Reviews on The Queen's Pleasures

Can't wait to read this one! Looks amazing. I am currently finishing up a book about Thomas Edison, "Inventing Madness" by J.G. Schwartz http://www.inventingmadness.com/- Current books depict Edison as a hero; Inventing Madness describes the darker side of this genius, including his cruelty towards his family and competitors. It has changed my thoughts on him completely, but is an amazing read. I am definitely checking out "The Ripper's Wife" next! So glad I stumbled across your site!
