REVIEW: Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath

Blurb:

Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath The first part of the book didn't really grab my interest, and I had trouble connecting to the characters, because "Phee" was definitely portrayed as someone who was difficult to like! Also, she was so horrid towards the hero at the beginning of the story, that it's hard to forget. She has her reasons for why she supposedly acted the way she did towards him, but I still do not think they were warranted. The last part of the book I started to get into it more, and I began to relate to the characters much better. Drake seemed like an all-around nice and honest man, and makes for a great hero. He could have had a little more of a "bad boy" in him, because he definitely does lack the rogue side of the character, but he is likable. Lady Ophelia becomes more likable, but the author put so much effort into making her unlikable, that really nothing can save her character.

Overall the story was well written, and it was a good work of historical romance. I gave it FOUR out of FOUR stars.

Reviews:

Heath steals your heart, then takes you on a journey that will leave you torn between tears and joy. (Christina Dodd)

“She writes from the heart and it shows!” (The Literary Times)

“Sensitive, funny and altogether enchanting!” (Dallas News)

“Master storyteller Heath perfectly threads together emotional power and deep romance. Taking her cue from Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist, she reinvents the story so we see what might have happened to the older Oliver. Few writers engage readers’ hearts and minds as beautifully as Heath certainly does.” Top Pick (Romantic Times BOOKclub)

About the Author:

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA's RITA®, a HOLT Medallion, and a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

Book Blurb:
Angelica Douglas has no idea that she’s the Countess of Melrose. What she does know is that she needs to support her family as a card shark, while finding a way to seek revenge on the men who ruined her father and sent her family spiralling down into poverty.

Robert Campbell, Marquess of Argyll, heir to the Duke of Inverary, has no idea who Angelica truly is. He just wants to watch over her and make her his mistress.

Angelica thinks Robert is simply a dashing rogue who is far too dangerous for her peace of mind. Robert thinks Angelica is an angel except when she’s being a pain in the behind.

When Robert finds out that his own father may have been one of the men who ruined Angelica’s family, he vows to keep a careful eye on her. When Angelica finds out that Robert’s father may have been one of the men responsible, she vows to stay as far away from Robert as possible. But when danger threatens, both Robert and Angelica must face the truth and let fate take the upper hand.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Angelica tossed the dice. A six and a one showed up.

“I’ll pass,” she announced, dropping the one hundred and twenty-eight pounds into her pocket.

Afraid to look at her victim, Angelica walked away without another word. She hadn’t gone more than a few feet when someone grabbed her arm. She whirled around, ready to defend herself.

“May I escort you home?” Robert asked, his smile charming.

Angelica was instantly suspicious. Did he want to steal her winnings? Or was his intention even more sinister? He was incredibly handsome, but her family came first. They depended on her for their survival.

“No, thank you,” she refused.

“You need protection,” he told her. “You carry a great deal of money.”

“Who will protect me from you, sir?” Angelica asked, arching a perfectly shaped brow at him.

“You don’t trust me?” Robert asked, giving her a lopsided grin.

“I trust no one,” she told him. “Especially men I don’t know.”

“We are merely friends who haven’t known each other very long,” Robert argued. “I let you cheat me out of a hundred and twenty-eight pounds. The least you can do is allow me to escort you home.”

“I never cheat,” Angelica insisted, and walked away.

“I suppose you don’t lie either,” he called.

Angelica quickened her pace. She squelched the urge to turn around to see if he was following her.

My Review:

To Tempt and Angel by Patricia Grasso grabbed my attention from the beginning with its colorful characters and interesting plot. Robert draws me in right away with his charm. He’s obviously a rogue who needs a woman to tame him. Angelica is the perfect mix of hard and soft, and she has a sweet touch of innocence that makes her a great heroine. The mystery of what happened to Angelica’s formerly wealthy, aristocratic family sets the pace for the novel, and piques the reader’s interest right from the start. You want to find out exactly what caused her family’s downfall, and also what exactly her plans for getting even entail. The sexual tension between Robert and Angelica is palpable, and it extends throughout the entire novel. When those two are in a room, you can feel the tension through the pages! The sex scenes are also HOT! HOT! HOT! It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good sex scene, and Ms. Grasso definitely accomplishes that in this book!

I enjoyed reading this book, and the only complaints I have are that the plot is a little out there. Her obsession with getting even with the men who she feels are completely responsible for her father’s downfall is a little annoying at times. I mean, her father was a drunk, so he was partially responsible for his own issues. She chooses to put all the blame on these other wealthy families, and focus on revenge, rather than bringing her family back to what it once was. Also, the fact that all of these men are willing to jump on her crazy train and help her get revenge against families who have never done anything to them is a little strange to me. However, it is fiction, and although her fixation on revenge at times makes her unlikable, overall it is a good read that I definitely recommend to lovers of historical romance.

I give To Tempt and Angel a FOUR out of FIVE stars.

Author Bio:
I'm a dog person. Who lives with 10 cats. Get the picture?

My first brush with the romance genre happened in my high school junior year. I discovered Gone With the Wind and hid it behind my American history book to read during class. (The Civil War is American history.) The ambiguous ending left me dissatisfied, though. Rhett and Scarlet needed a happily-ever-after. Believing in happily-ever-afters positively screams romantic-at-heart.

On the other hand, I love murder and mayhem as much as happily-ever-after. My usual television fare is fiction and nonfiction crime shows, not love stories. Which accounts for the mysteries I sneaked into my historical romances. Now I'm trying my hand at writing a humorous mystery, sans historical and sans emphasis on the love interest. I even prepared for my mystery-in-progress by attending the local NRA's Pistol School. Shooting pistols is great fun. I adore the .22 semiautomatics.

After graduating from high school without distinction, I earned both Bachelor and Master degrees at a state college. Again, without distinction. I held several part-time jobs during my college days: file clerk in an insurance company, long-distance telephone operator, kimono-wearing waitress in a Japanese restaurant.

And then I began my teaching career, eighteen years in the eighth grade and thirteen years at the high school. Weary with the same old routine, I decided I needed a creative outlet. So I decided to write a romance novel but only managed to talk about writing one. After five years of listening to me, a friend said to stop talking and start writing.

So I did.

I made every mistake known to man. Blunder would be a more appropriate word, but I did learn using the trial and error method. As well as studying the works of authors I admired.

After five years of writing for nothing but love, I sold my first novel. Since then, I've sold eighteen novels and won several awards--- National Readers' Choice Award New England Readers' Choice Award, Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice and KISS Awards, B. Dalton and Bookrak Awards for best-selling author. My novels have been translated into fifteen languages and sold in twenty countries.

If I had my life over, would I become a writer? Nope. I would enjoy being a Victoria Secret model. Perhaps in my next incarnation I won't be too old, too short, or too unphotogenic.

Born with the mark of the devil, Merrin has been hidden on the islet of Eilean Fladda for near twenty years. Warm.
When the body of a Highlander washes ashore, the innocent lass presumes him dead. Brushing the hair from the rugged warrior’s face, her fingers connect with warm flesh.

Ian MacLeod wakes to a woman so radiant, he believes her an angel. But when the lass recoils from him, he fears she knows of his evil deeds. While he heals, Ian is stunned when he exposes her witch’s mark, yet he’s spellbound by Merrin’s allure. He’d do anything to erase his haunting past and earn her love.

But there’s a henchman after Ian’s head, and when that man learns the Highlander is still alive, the couple is forced to flee Merrin’s sheltered world. Fighting for survival, destiny demands they each face their demons, but doing so may forever ruin them both.

Excerpt of Beauty and the Barbarian:

Chapter One

Sprinting onto a thin strip of beach, Ian raced for the shore. Rain pelted his face as he skidded to a stop. Gasping for air, he sucked in deep breaths and peered through the dark night—north, then south. Thank God. A lone skiff sat askew, poorly camouflaged at the tree-line edge.

His side cramping from his frantic escape, he darted to the tiny boat with a pained hitch to his step. The deerhounds’ barks grew closer. If he hesitated, they’d be upon him in a blink of an eye.

Ian’s heart hammered his chest as he bore down on the skiff and shoved it into the angry swells. He jumped over the bow and snatched an oar. With every muscle, every sinew, he paddled against the surf and ignored his fatigue. A single oar made the boat fishtail, but there was no time to set them in their locks. Ian gritted his teeth and slammed the oar into the white swells in a hurried rhythm, side to side.

Over the roar of the surf and the driving rain, dogs yelped in an excited frenzy. Men shouted. Ian didn’t turn around—he needed more distance. As sure as he breathed, they were ramming lead balls down their muskets. With luck, the rain had soaked their slow matches, rendering the guns useless.

Ian sped his determined paddling and squinted through the pelting rain—across to his home, the Isle of Raasay. He hadn’t set foot there since he was four and ten, but the sight of the island enlivened him. He could barely make out the black outline of Dùn Caan, the flat-topped peak that forever identified the isle as Clan MacLeod land.

A sharp jab struck him from behind. Ian’s body propelled forward. His nose slammed into the wooden hull. An ear-shattering musket clap followed, piercing through the wind. Something stung, burned his back. Ian slid his hand over the screaming pain. Hot blood oozed through his fingers.

More claps blasted from the beach, thudding into the tiny skiff. Ian rolled to his side. Icy water spurted over him. Frantically, he worked to hug both wooden oars against his chest. A thousand knives attacked his skin as salt water swallowed his lifeline to Raasay. The last thing he saw was the looming outline of Dùn Caan.

Blackness engulfed him.

Roan Rose

Publication Date: October 1, 2013
Books We Love, Ltd.
Formats: eBook, Paperback

Loyalty Binds Her.
More like a gangland war for turf and loot than chivalry, the War of Roses disrupted the life of the English commoners for hundreds of years. Roan Rose is the story of one of them, a girl born on the Yorkshire dales. When the Countess of Warwick decides to take sturdy, gentle Rose to Middleham Castle to be companion and bed-time poppet for her youngest daughter, Anne, her fate is changed forever. Rose bears intimate witness to the passions, betrayals, battles and all the reversals of fortune which will shape her lady’s life—and her own. Anne Neville will briefly become a Queen, and Richard, Rose’s secret love, will become a King, one whose name has become synonymous with evil. When her King is betrayed and slain at Bosworth Field, Rose returns to a peasant’s hard life. She has one final service to perform.

Praise for Roan Rose

“a beautiful story of love and loyalty set during the tumultuous reign of Richard III”

“I loved the strength of this woman”

“This author has a powerful sense of Time and Place”

“Waldron certainly knows her history…Yet despite its accuracy … Roan Rose is ultimately a book about character”.

My Review

I could tell that I was going to enjoy “Roan Rose” within the first chapter. The author was great with descriptions from the start, and as a reader you were really able to get an idea of who the characters were and what they were about. Great writing style, flowed smoothly and kept my interest while reading. Rose is a great main character. She’s extremely intelligent and precocious as a young child. She’s also very strong willed, and it’s easy to care about her and what happens to her in the novel. I love reading historical fiction that is set during the War of Roses in England. I already knew who the characters were, but it’s always great to see how different authors describe characters that are central in many books. I really liked Anne Neville’s character in this novel, you couldn’t help but care about her and want the best for her. Isabel Neville is described as stuck up, and her husband, George of Clarence, is what I would imagine pure evil to be in this book! Most novels portray Richard as an evil king, who usurped his nephew’s throne, and then killed his nephews while they were supposed to be under his protection in the Tower. It was interesting to read about Richard in a different light. He is described as caring, and it’s easy to like him and believe he wasn’t able to do all of the evil things history has accused him of. Rose and Anne’s relationship was such a strong one. Rose seemed to worship the ground that Anne walked on, and it almost seemed that she loved her as more than just her servant or friend, she seems to have almost a romantic love for Anne. I liked that the author focused more on Rose and her life as a commoner, than on the lives of the nobility. So many novels focus on the nobility, and it gets a little redundant. It’s nice to read a novel that shakes things up a little, and gives me as the reader something new and interesting to read.

I would definitely recommend this novel to lovers of historical fiction, especially those who are interested in England’s War of the Roses. The novel did start off a little slow, but once it got going, it was hard to put down.

I give this novel a FOUR out of FIVE stars.

BOOK REVIEW: A Triple Knot by Emma Campion

Blurb:

The critically acclaimed author of The King's Mistress brings another fascinating woman from history to life in an enthralling story of political intrigue, personal tragedy, and illicit love.
Joan of Kent, renowned beauty and cousin to King Edward III, is destined for a politically strategic marriage. As the king begins a long dynastic struggle to claim the crown of France, plunging England into the Hundred Years’ War, he negotiates her betrothal to a potential ally and heir of a powerful lordship.

But Joan, haunted by nightmares of her father’s execution at the hands of her treacherous royal kin, fears the king’s selection and is not resigned to her fate. She secretly pledges herself to one of the king’s own knights, one who has become a trusted friend and protector. Now she must defend her vow as the king—furious at Joan’s defiance—prepares to marry her off to another man.

In A Triple Knot, Emma Campion brings Joan, the “Fair Maid of Kent” to glorious life, deftly weaving details of King Edward III’s extravagant court into a rich and emotionally resonant tale of intrigue, love, and betrayal.

About the Author:

Emma Campion did her graduate work in medieval literature and history, and has continued to study the period while working first as an editor of scientific publications and now for some years as a freelance writer. She was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, grew up in Cincinnati, and has lived most of her adult life in Seattle, which she and her husband love for its combination of natural beauty and culture. Emma enjoys walking, hiking, and gardening, and practices yoga and vipassana meditation. She travels frequently to Great Britain.
Emma's current passion is exploring fuller and more plausible interpretations of the lives of women in the 14th century than are generally presented.

My Review:

“A Triple Knot” by Emma Campion is a fascinating historical fiction novel. Joan of Kent and Eleanor of Aquitaine are two of my favorite women in history to read about, so I jumped on reading a novel about Joan. Her life was seriously like a soap opera. She was loved by three different men, betrothed to one but married to another, then that marriage was annulled and she was remarried to the first one, and all of this while being love by Edward of Woodstock, who was to be the future King of England. Her life story is so crazy that it’s almost hard to believe! I really like that the novel began when Joan was young, because it gives the reader the whole picture of her life and her background, and it shows the hardships she went through after the loss of her father. “A Triple Knot” was well-written and smooth flowing. Once I started reading it, I had trouble putting it down! Joan’s life is perfect for a novel. It was full of intrigue, love, lust, and lies. She was a strong woman of her time, and she definitely made her mark in history.

I would recommend this novel to lovers of historical fiction, especially those who are fascinated with England’s Kings and Queens. You really get a good look into the lives of royalty in this novel, and overall it’s a great read.

I give this novel a FIVE out of FIVE stars.

BLOG TOUR: Genesee by Juliet Waldron

Genesee

Publication Date: November 7, 2010
Books We Love, Ltd.
Formats: eBook, Paperback

The 2003 Eppie Award Winner in Historicals

Red and White–at war in the world, and in her blood.
Born to a runaway Dutch teen and an Iroquois brave, raised in her white uncle’s frontier home, Genesee visits her mother’s family in colonial Albany. Here she meets a young Englishman and falls in love. He’s as much of an outcast as his “half-breed” girl, for Alexander was born “on the wrong side of the blanket”, and his only fortune is a good mind. Forbidden to marry, Genesee is sent home again, but when the Revolution sets the New York frontier ablaze, she is carried into captivity. In a Cayuga longhouse, she dreams of him, but will Alexander still want her–and will he brave torture and death to bring her home again?

Praise for Genesee

“GENESEE is an extraordinary book about love, hardship and prejudice. It’s well written and full of wonderful characters… This story isn’t sugarcoated, which is really refreshing.” – Renee Burnette

“This is a great read… Very vivid scenes and richly woven. This author is great!” – Karol A. Clifton, Amazon reader

“Romance that puts history up front! This is a real slice of history, with a heroine and her hero in 3-D.” – LJ Walker

My Review

“Genesee” by Juliet Waldron turned out to be a great historical fiction read. You can’t help but like Genesee from the beginning of the novel. She comes across as sweet, innocent, and somewhat naïve, and you are rooting for someone to come along and protect her. Alexander is that perfect person for Genesee, and as a reader you are rooting for them as a couple, even though they go through so much just to be together. Alexander is your typical strong, silent type, which makes him the perfect romantic hero, and perfect for Genesee. The writing style in this novel is excellent, and the descriptions were great. The action is described so clearly that you feel like you’re right there with them when the action is going down. The book started out a little slowly, but after it started picking up it was hard to put down. I was on the edge of my seat, almost skipping sections of this book in order to find out what was going to happen next. I love books like that, books that keep you up at night because you can’t put them down!

Although the book was a little slow at the beginning, it did pick up and more than make up for that, so I would definitely recommend this book to historical fiction fans.

I give this novel a FOUR out of FIVE stars.
